How to Identify Dyslexia

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is the problem in learning to read, for several children with normal IQ's and without the presence of other physical or psychological problems that may explain the difficulties. It should be borne in mind that although dyslexia refers to reading problems usually occurs along with writing difficulties or disortografia. It would therefore be more logical to speak of trouble learning to read and write, or literacy problems.

There are two types of dyslexia:
  1. Acquired dyslexia: the people who suffer after having achieved a certain level reader, they lose some of these skills following brain injury.
  2. Dyslexia: children with no apparent reason present special difficulties in learning to read. This is in dyslexia to which we will refer.
We must also bear in mind that not all difficulties in reading means that we are faced with a child with dyslexia. Reading is a very complex activity in which learning is normal in early difficulties and errors that occur need not indicate future dyslexia. It is considered that to talk about dyslexia should be a delay of two years compared with the expected level of reading.

The estimated specific learning problems are caused by the difficulty of the nervous system that affects the uptake, processing or disclosure of these children with dyslexia. Some are hyperactive or inattentive, with very short attention span, which is known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

These children are treated and their condition is not serious, usually, but if the disorder is not detected and treated early, the problem may increase and complicated fast. A child in elementary school do not learn to add, to get to college, you can not understand algebra.

The child who tries to learn with great effort and develop progressively frustrated emotional problems such as lack of self esteem, the result of repeated failures. Some children with learning problems may also experience behavioral problems, preferring to look "bad" instead of "stupid or gross. Parents should know the signs that most often indicate learning problems in children.

  • Difficulty in attending or following instructions.
  • Difficulty remembering what you just said.
  • Academic failure as a result of little mastery of skills of reading, writing and / or arithmetic.
  • Difficulty in distinguishing between right and left, for example, confusing 25 with 52 the b to d, for at, on or not, and so on.
  • Defects in coordination - when walking, sports, simple manual activities like holding a pencil, tying your shoes or make a loop.
  • Stray notes from school, books, notebooks and other materials.
  • He can not learn the concepts of time, confusing "yesterday," today "," tomorrow ".
The child psychiatrist or psychologist should work collaboratively with educators and school staff, to test that can detect the reason for the difficulty in the use and presence of specific learning problems. After interviewing the child and family, and to assess the situation, the child psychiatrist or psychologist will make recommendations regarding appropriate school placement for the child, the need for special assistance, academic therapy, occupational, or speech, and take steps to help the child develop their full potential.

Sometimes the psychiatrist will prescribe medications when necessary to control hyperactivity or distractibility. Work with the child in strengthening their self-confidence is essential for healthy emotional development. It will also help parents and other family members to confront the reality of living with a child with specific learning problems.
